SST initially started out to meet monthly to share
our passion for reading. We soon had a vision that this book club was
destined to be more than just a social reading group.
There
are currently thirteen wonderful diverse ladies between the ages of
30 - 50's. We wanted to create a bond with one another and strive
for longevity, while making a visible difference
in our community. Our Sistah's wanted to be a literary force to be
reckoned with.
The
bonding started almost immediately as we recognized how wonderful
it felt to be amongst a group of women where we could simply be ourselves.
Too often, women are not free to express their individuality without
fear of criticism or sabotage by their peers. With SST, we have truly
found a group of women who can laugh together, cry together, and rejoice
in our accomplishments. To discover and appreciate the pleasure that
reading in good company brings is a true blessing. Our monthly meetings
have created ;a virtual retreat where, for a few hours each month,
we share a serene and meaningful diversion, as we assemble for the
sake of reading and sisterhood. Obstacles are worked out and we continue
to grow.
Book
clubs have made an astonishing mark in today's society. In this fast
paced world we often forget to take time to reflect. We become more
isolated, though we are connected by technology as never before. Reading
groups are having a positive impact on today's society because they
are bringing people together again. The lines of sincere communication
are opened, and a restoring of spirit is happening. Much has been
said about the power of reading, much can also be said for the benefits
of discussing what you have read with others. These discussions are
sometimes cathartic and sometimes purely entertaining; but they are
always enriching.
As
we discuss and fellowship we expand our interests, we expand our vocabulary,
we engage in the art of debate, we learn to listen, we learn to express,
we embrace diversity, we broaden our minds. Through all of these things
we strengthen each other, and by strengthening each other we strengthen
our community.
Our running theme of taking care of ourselves spiritually, mentally
and physically, gives us that burst of needed energy to go out and
strive to be better citizens. By committing random acts of kindness
within our communities, we have learned that eventually, it will spread
beyond our organization. We believe that promoting and nurturing literacy
makes our communities stronger. SST knows that putting the right book
in the right hands matters. Our commitment is to continue promoting
lifelong learning while spreading the word that a good book is never
exhausted. A good book goes on and on, whispering to you through the
inner walls of your emerging minds. We truly believe that the love
we have for literature has brought us together in harmony. We are
blessed that one of the gifts God gave us, is each other.
